The Iowa Democratic Party Hispanic Caucus on Wednesday urged Republican National Chair Reince Priebus to publicly denounce Rep. Steve King (R-IA) for comparing immigrants to hunting dogs.

“The degrading metaphor used by Congressman King on Monday sent shockwaves through the Hispanic community,” said Hispanic Caucus Chair Paula A. Martinez. “While this type of divisive language has unfortunately become commonplace for King , it is disheartening to see that Republican Party leadership is unwilling to stand up and publicly oppose this brand of discriminatory rhetoric. Today, we are calling on RNC Chair Reince Priebus to disavow King’s message and urge Congressman King to retract his comments from Monday.”

King on Monday told a crowd in Pocahontas, Iowa that the U.S. should only allow the “pick of the litter” when to be allowed into the United States and warned against picking “the one that’s over there sleeping in the corner.”

Tuesday on CNN, Priebus said he wouldn’t comment on King’s remark because he “couldn’t hear what he said.” He added that the Republican Party was “dedicated to reaching out and appealing to Hispanics across America.”

“It is disheartening that, with King’s endorsement of Romney, he joins anti-immigrant leaders like Kris Kobach – the architect of extreme anti-immigrant state laws – and Arizona governor Jan Brewer,” said Martinez. “And King has only reinforced his stance on the issue by endorsing the candidate who, on immigration, would be the most extreme presidential nominee of our time. These fringe positions are beginning to define their party.”
